What is a Segway?

The Segway Human Transporter is the first of its kind-a self-balancing, personal transportation device designed to go anywhere people do. Easy to use and operate, the two-wheeled Segway sports high-tech gyroscopes that automatically respond to your body’s movements, “sensing” when it should speed up and slow down.

You stand on a small platform between left and right wheels as you hold onto handlebars at a comfortable waist height. The Segway handles the balancing for you, so that you’re always upright as you glide through any environment. City Segway Tours uses the new i2 machines!

Is there a weight limit for the tour?

There is a recommended limit of 265 lbs. and we ask our guests to be within a reasonable range of this limit.

How far in advance do I need to reserve?

We suggest you either book online, or call our toll-free number 877-SEG-TOUR (877-734-8687). All of our tours are limited in size, so be sure you reserve your space today by clicking here. If we are booked online, try giving us a call; we close our online reservations 24 hours before each tour to avoid over booking.

No, our tours run rain or shine. We have ponchos available for anyone that needs them in our office.

Do we go inside the museums and monuments?

We do not enter the museums and monuments since the Segways are so much fun! We will give you a great orientation however, so you’ll know exactly where you want to go after the tour and hopefully narrow down your choices to get the most of your time in DC.

Can I rent a Segway without a guide?

Unfortunately, we do not rent our Segways out to individuals without a guide. Since our tours are virtually always full, we need all machines for our tour customers.

Are the Segways safe for children or people with disabilities?

Although riding a Segway is relatively easy, the District of Columbia requires that all riders be at least 16 years of age. Therefore no children under the age of 16 will be permitted on the Segway tour in accordance with City Law. Luckily, we do offer another way to see DC via bike thru Capital City Bike Tours. Any minors under the age of 18 would need to be accompanied by an adult on any tour.

Each of our tours begin with a 30-minute orientation session. We will practice on the Segways until everyone feels comfortable. A Segway is not an ideal mode of touring for people with some mobility issues. All guests must be able to easily and quickly step on and off the Segway without any assistance, which requires physical abilities similar to climbing and descending stairs without assistance or use of handrails.

How do you hear the tour guide?

Easy, we talk to you! Our groups are small and we take the time to stop at the sites so you can soak them in, take pictures, ask questions and of course, so that our knowledgeable guides have time to fill you in on all the history, anectodotes, and urban legends. Our guides are there to help and always make themselves available to help take pictures, answer your questions, and assist in ever way possiple.

How large are the tours?

We limit our groups to 8 people per tour guide to ensure your safety and provide the best service. Smaller groups also make it easier to hear your guide and give you the ability to ask questions.

What is there to do before/after the tour?

Being in the heart of DC has its advantages. Our office is a short walk from the National Mall and the museums that surround it. Ford’s Theater, the International Spy Museum, the Museum of Crime and Punishment, and The Smithsonian American Art Museum/National Portrait Gallery are all within a few blocks walk! In addition, there are some world-class restaurants nearby. Need suggestions? Just ask our guides, they know the best places to eat, and will do their best to help you maximize your time in DC.

Is there parking nearby?

There is street parking and garage parking available all around our office. Our office is adjacent to an under-ground parking garage. Parking hours change daily, so it is important to check with parking attendants and parking meters to make sure that you are within the set restrictions. Though parking is available, we always encourage our guests to use the METRO to avoid street closures and heavy traffic.

What’s the closest subway station?

Washington, DC has one of the world’s safest and most efficient subways, known affectionately as the METRO. The Gallery Place/Chinatown Metro Station has an entrance/exit just across the street from us. When you arrive at the station make sure you look for the signs that point you to the “9th and G Street” exit, we will be right across the street.

What restrictions are there for Segway riders?

All riders in Washington, DC need to be 16 years of age, in accordance with City Law. In addition, guests who are pregnant or under the influence of drugs or alcohol will not be permitted to ride. Finally, there is a recommended weight limit of 265 lbs.

How fast are the Segways?

All of our tours begin on a slower speed to ensure the safety of each of our guests and that everyone gets acclimated to the Segway. Shortly into the tour, our tour guides adjust the maximum speed to allow you to fully enjoy the Segway at its top speed.

When I get there, are there any forms to fill out?

We have two forms for each group that comes in. Every person in the party will need to fill out a simple release forms. Also, each reservation is required to provide a credit to save on file while they are on tour with the Segway's. The credit card will not be charged, or even pre-authorized, unless damage to the machine occurs on tour.

Do you offer refunds for cancelled tours?

Your tour ticket is fully refundable if you call us at least 72 hours before the tour. Any cancellation inside 72 hours, for ANY reason, is not eligible for a refund, but does qualify for a stand-by ticket to ride some other time.
