Hungarian Parliament

Hungary's National Assembly sits on the banks of the Danube. The Assembly established a competition for their new building and construction was completed in 1904. It is the second largest Parliament Building in Europe.

St. Stephen's Basilica

Named in honor of Stephen, the first King of Hungary from roughly 975-1038, this ecclesiastic basilica is the tallest building in Budapest along with the Hungarian Parliament Building reaching 96 meters. It took approximately 54 years to construct and was completed in 1905.

Opera House

The Hungarian Royal Opera House opened in 1884 and is considered to be a masterpiece of neo-Renaissance style. It has been rated by engineers to have the third best acoustics in Europe, after the Scala in Milan and the Paris Opera House.

Széchenyi Chain Bridge

The Széchenyi Chain Bridge is the first bridge to cross the Danube River connecting the western and eastern side, Buda and Pest respectively, of the capital city. Designed by English engineer William Tierney Clark, it was opened in 1849.

Communist History

After World War II, the Soviet army occupied the entire country and through its influence Hungary gradually became a communist satellite state of the Soviet Union. In early 1989 Hungary began to remove the barbed wire fence along the Austrian border. In September of that year the government announced that East German refugees would be allowed to go to the West. The first tear in the Iron Curtain had occurred.

Danube River

The Danube is one of the most famous rivers in the world and cuts Budapest in half. The river begins in Germany and empties into the Black Sea, traveling roughly 1,771 miles. In Budapest, the Castle District of Buda has a mountainous terrain while the Pest side of the river is relatively flat.

Views of Buda

The western part of the capital located on the west bank of the Danube River. The name Buda comes from Bleda the Hun ruler, whose name in Hungarian is Buda. Comprising about one-third of the entire city of Budapest, it is mostly hilly and wooded.
